Loose your money in Wildwood Crest, NJ

For this year's Labor Day weekend my wife and I decided to get away from the city and spend few days with our 5-year old son on the New Jersey shore. Wildwood Crest, New Jersey is a great place to for this kind of getaway. And since we already did this once last year, we knew that that would be the place to go. So after doing a little research on-line and evaluating our options, we picked the place called Coliseum Ocean Resort (www.coliseumoceanresort.com). They had very decent special promotion, and the place looked very nice based on the pictures, so we booked it for three nights. The person taking the reservation informed me that I would have to send them a personal check for the deposit in the amount of $175 to secure our reservation. For some reason they would not accept credit cards for deposits (now I know why). I mailed my check to them next day and shortly after that (which happened to be 13 days prior to my stay at the hotel) received a receipt/booking confirmation from the hotel, which informed me that my deposit is only refundable only if reservation canceled 21 days prior to stay. I did not plan on canceling our trip, although, as you realize it was too late to cancel at that point anyway. However, when due to some circumstances beyond my control, we had to cancel the trip I called the hotel and asked them for the refund, they told me that I will not be able to get it. The facts: a) Hotel's very creative website is silent abut their cancellation and refund policy. (I would not have reserved the room there if I new that I might loose my deposit without ever going there). b) Their staff person who took my reservation 22 days prior to my stay neglected to mention to me that starting with next day I would not be able to get my deposit back, if I decided to cancel my reservation. c) I finally get the disclaimer about the refund policy 13 days prior to my check in date, too late to get the refund. d) They only accept personal checks as the form of the deposit. No credit cards, it might be too difficult the keep the deposit received, if credit card decides to contest the charge (which they often do based on the request from the cardholder) I have to admit, Mr. Anthony Polizze from the Coliseum Ocean Resort offered me a discount towards my next stay at their hotel. Do they really think I will try to get their services again? I don't think so. I am planning on filing the complaint with BBB of New Jersey. I am not sure if this will help me get my money back, but at least I'll let other people know to stay away from this hotel. Boris Treyger Staten Island
